So you’ve got an avocado, but now what? Is it ripe? Is it ready to cut? How do you cut an avocado anyways?
Start over! You’ll need a sharp knife and a soup spoon.
Rotate the avocado away from you allowing the knife to glide around the pit and cut the avocado into two halves (refer to video below).
Remove the pit.
Note: If you are using a knife to remove the pit, be careful! Hold the avocado in one hand with a towel (to protect your fingers from the knife) and use the thicker part of the blade (closer to the handle) to stab/grab the pit. Do not use the thin portion of the knife, as it can easily slip off the pit.
Slice the avocado.
Scoop the slices out.
How To Cut An Avocado
Ingredients
- Ripe avocado (find out if it’s ripe here)
- Knife
- Soup spoon (preferably thin to easily get under skin)
Instructions
- Slice the avocado vertically (refer to photos / video). To do this, hold the avocado in one hand and with the other hand slice vertically (up and down) so that the knife is bisecting the avocado (see picture). Holding the knife steady, rotate the avocado away from you allowing the knife to glide around the pit and cut the avocado into two halves.
- Remove the pit. To do this you can carefully stab it with a knife or pick it out with your fingers/spoon. Sometimes the pit is “really stuck” and it’s not easy to remove with just your fingers/spoon. If you are using a knife to remove the pit, be careful! Hold the avocado in one hand with a towel (to protect your fingers from the knife) and use the thicker part of the blade (closer to the handle) to stab/grab the pit. Do not use the thin portion of the knife, as it can easily slip off the pit.
- Once the pit has been removed, use the tip of the knife to slice the avocado either vertically or horizontally without piercing the skin. You can also slice crossways to cube the avocado.
- Once the avocado has been sliced, gently slide a spoon between the flesh and the skin of the avocado. Push the spoon through the entire avocado ensuring separation between all of the flesh and the skin.
- Scoop out slices and enjoy.
Notes
Alternatively, you can cut scoop the entire half out of the avocado and then cut it on the cutting board OR cut the avocado into quarters (instead of halves) and remove the skin with a spoon if that is easier.
